Women and Girls in Tech: Starting an IT Career in KP

Technology is one of the few fields where a client on another continent judges your work, not your background — and where the job can be done from home if that is what your circumstances require. For many women and girls in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, that combination is what makes an IT career realistic rather than theoretical.

This guide is written from what we see in our own classrooms in Kohat, where female students study alongside male students, and where several graduates now work as developers, designers and freelancers.

Choose a field with remote demand

Some skills travel well online; others require a physical presence. If flexibility matters to you, start with one of these:

• Frontend and full-stack web development — highest and most consistent demand.
• UI/UX design — strong fit if you have visual sense and patience for feedback.
• Graphic design and brand work — fastest route to a first small income.
• Data analysis and AI application work — growing quickly, higher rates, longer learning curve.
• SEO and digital marketing — no heavy coding, measurable results, easy to prove.

A study plan that fits a real schedule

Most of our female students are also managing university, school or family responsibilities. What works is consistency, not marathon sessions:

• Two focused hours on four weekdays, at a fixed time you defend.
• One three-hour project block at the weekend.
• Recorded class material for the sessions you must miss.

Six months of that is enough to be employable. We have seen it repeatedly.

Study on-site or entirely online

Our Kohat center runs on-site batches Saturday to Thursday and live online batches covering the same syllabus, with recordings. Female students choose either. If you or your family prefer online-only attendance, that is a completely normal arrangement here, not a special request — and it does not change the certificate, the projects or the support you receive.

Building credibility without a network

You do not need contacts to start; you need evidence. Three things carry disproportionate weight:

1. A portfolio site of your own. Three finished projects, each with a short write-up of the problem and your approach.
2. Public code. A GitHub profile with steady commits shows how you work, not just what you produced.
3. A clear first message. Clients hire people who write plainly, answer the actual question and state a timeline. This is a learnable skill and it is worth more than a fourth framework.

Practical safety and payment notes

• Keep client communication on the platform until the first payment clears; use written scopes for everything.
• Take an advance — 30% to 50% is normal and professional to request.
• Set up your bank's international remittance facility before you need it.
• Separate your professional and personal accounts and share only what a client genuinely needs.

Income expectations, honestly

First small design or web projects locally: PKR 10,000–40,000 each. Steady freelance work after a credible portfolio: PKR 60,000–200,000 per month, varying widely with skill and consistency. Salaried junior roles at Pakistani software houses: roughly PKR 60,000–120,000 per month. None of these arrive in the first month, and anyone promising otherwise is selling something.

Pick one field from the list above. Give it six weeks of consistent effort before you allow yourself to reconsider — most people quit during the frustrating middle, not at the start.
